A day out at Aburi Botanical Gardens

“If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the fields has power to move you, if the simple things of nature have a message that you understand, rejoice, for your soul is alive.”  ~Eleonora Duse

Not feeling up to a long journey this weekend I passed on the trip to the Wli waterfalls and hopped onto a tro tro to Aburi Botanical Gardens instead.  Aburi is a mountainous sleepy town just on the outskirts of Accra with stunning views of the city below. Unfortunately, I was travelling by tro tro so did not get the chance to really enjoy it as the driver seemed to be on speed.

I wonder how old this tree is

The gardens themselves were not quite what I expected, for a start it is smaller and quieter.  Having said that it is absolutely beautiful and a great place to spend a Saturday afternoon.  It is very serene and with plenty of benches, or grass for those who prefer to be closer to the earth, one can just lie back and contemplate the makings of the universe.

This weekend, a church was holding one of its social outings in the park so there was loud music and a lot of young people running around in some parts.  Apparently, they had walked up the hill in an effort to raise awareness of the benefits of regular exercise.  After three hours of walking around the park, talking to people and enjoying the peace and tranquillity around me, I headed home.
